Update of what i've been doing
A lot has happend
It has been a while since I've last updated my website, as you can see I've done several assignments the last 2 months.
Here is an update of what I've been doing and what I will be doing.
I've made 2 websites, a lot of flyers, a review and a new rebus.
For the last couple of months I have also been working on a secret project which I hope to release end of April.
I will post updates on this site.
In february I've also started a school project for a real client. I can't tell to much about the project or for who it is.
We will make a game involving the Wiimote and balance board. I haven't worked with the Wii yet so it will be nice to learn.
I can also tell that it will be a serious game. We also made a trailer to introduce our team, you can watch it below.

Does heaven look like this
Heaven is een point and click game voor de pc die zoals de titel aangeeft, te maken heeft met de hemel, sterker nog, het speelt zich af in de hemel. Nou denk ik dat je nooit met een game kan laten zien hoe de hemel eruit ziet. Als eerste valt gelijk op dat ze de hemel echt heel mooi weergeven, daar hebben ze echt hun best opgedaan. Als dat hun doel was met deze game dan zijn ze daar zeker in geslaagd. Helaas, als je gaat spelen verdwijnt al die schoonheid een beetje door 2 grote irritaties. Je speelt een astronaut die met zijn space shuttle in een meteorieten zwerm terecht komt, vervolgens wordt je gered door engelen en die brengen je naar de hemel. In de hemel kom je, je oma tegen die in de hemel op Pamela Anderson lijkt.
Ik snap dat ze willen laten zien dat in de hemel alles mooi is, maar voor mij pakt dit wat verkeerd uit. Als je met haar gaat praten, dreunt ze steeds iets op over God als een soort robot. Dit is jammer want ze zegt wel hele goede dingen. Het andere vervelende aan de game is dat je heel vaak dezelfde handeling moet doen om verder te komen, deze 2 dingen en dat ik niet van point and click games houd, leidde ertoe dat ik de game al vroeg aan de kant schoof. Dit is jammer want ik was nog wel benieuwd naar de geweldig mooi vormgegeven straten van goud, Jeruzalem en de troon van Jezus.

Show me your moves
Super smash bros. brawl(SSBB) is een zeer populaire titel die op de Nintendo Wii is verschenen. Super smash bros. brawl is geen christelijke game, maar wel een game die "okay" is, vandaar dat ik naar deze game wou kijken. SSBB is een fighting game, nou zijn fighting games vaak agressief, maar SSBB is hier duidelijk een uitzondering van. Wat mooi is aan SSBB is dat je met allemaal verschillende characters van Nintendo games kan spelen, zo kan je uiteraard spelen met Mario en Luigi, maar ook met Link, Zelda, Kirby en Pikachu en nog veel meer. Je vecht met elkaar(4 spelers maximaal) op een groot platform waarbij je de tegenstander van het platform af moet slaan. Wat heel uniek is aan het vechtsysteem van SSBB is dat elke speler begint met 0%, als je wordt geraakt door de tegenstander stijgt je %, hoe meer %, hoe harder je wegvliegt, dit is heel anders dan andere fighting games zoals DOA & Tekken. SSBB heeft daarnaast ook een hele gafe story mode, je zal je niet snel vervelen met deze game en ik speel deze game al een hele tijd. Als je graag een fighting game wil spelen is dit een echte aanrader.

I got the assignment to build the website for Wisebloom, where I also have my internship.
My main task for this website was programming, I did a little designing. The best part of the website
is the colofon which I programmed in flash. You can see everyone who is working with Wisebloom in a nice creative way.
I also integrated wordpress and twitter with this website.

Some more information about me
You could say Bear Grylls is my "hero"
I did an Alpha course which was very important for me, I learned a lot there. During the course
I constantly thought "why has no one said this to me before"
I can really recommend this for anyone
I also like to survival, although not as extreme as Bear Grylls, I'm really a fan of him, you could say that he is some kind of "hero" for me. After I found
out that he also did the Alpha Course he is even a bigger "hero" for me.

Kiezen voor het goede of het kwade???
In the force unleashed begin je niet bepaald als een lieverdje.
Je speelt namelijk een sith die als klein jongetje is gevonden en
opgevoed door Darth Vader. Zo begin je dus aan de duistere kant,
niemand weet verder van je bestaan af en je bent de geheime leerling van Darth Vader. In de eerste missie moet je een Jedi vermoorden en vecht je je weg door honderden vijanden terwijl je gebruik maakt van de force (een bovennatuurlijke superkracht waarmee je objecten en personen de lucht in kan laten slingeren) en je lichtzwaard. Doordat niemand van je bestaan mag afweten vecht je tegen zowel de rebels(de goeierikken) en the Empire (leger van Darth vader en the Emperor) In het begin ben je dus de complete slechterik, maar als je verder speelt ga je toch steeds meer richting de goeie kant en uiteindelijk krijg je de keuze om te kiezen voor de light side of the dark side. Wat ik mooi vindt aan star wars is dat er een heel duidelijk verschil zit tussen goed en kwaad en dat de verleidingen van het kwaad ook heel sterk zijn. Dit merk je ook in de game, het is heel verleidelijk om kwade dingen te doen, vooral omdat het ook zo makkelijk is, je hebt superkrachten waar je verschrikkelijke dingen mee kan doen met je vijanden, in dat opzicht is het een behoorlijke gewelddadige game, maar als je hier doorheen kijkt zie je een mooie strijd tussen goed en kwaad.

Last friday I went to "game in the city" in Amersfoort. During this day there were several
masterclasses about game design and buiseness and games. This was a very interesting day for
gamedesign students and starters in the game industry, that is why I went there. I followed
all the masterclasses about buiseness and games which were very interesting and will help me in the future.
What I found most interesting about the day is that I've met several of my classmates and talked with them about their future
as game designer, what will they do when they finish school. I can see that everybody is getting more and more professional in my year, I'm very interesting
so see where everyone will be after we finish school, there's no doubt that some very good games will appear in the Netherlands in the future.

This is something I have been wandering around with for quite some time now.
The game mechanics is what makes the game fun and some standard game mechanics are
jumping, collecting, shooting.
Now I think it is interesting to use bible texts as game mechanics, just randomly open
the bible, pick a text and use that text as core game mechanic for your game.
I am already busy with making these games and you could expect the first game to come out within 1 or 2 months

Kaïn leeft nog???
Deze keer de populaire Real Time Strategy(RTS) serie Command and Conquer (C&C). In 2010 verschijnt waarschijnlijk het 4e en tevens laatste deel van de Tiberian serie.
C&C is interessant omdat er veel christelijke verwijzingen inzitten. De Tiberian serie gaat over de oorlog tussen de GDI, een speciaal opgerichte eenheid door de verenigde naties en een terroristengroep onder leiding van een mysterieze man genaamd Kane. Kane verwijst naar Kaïn (de eerste moordenaar) en sommige volgelingen geloven ook echt dat hij diezelfde Kaïn is. Kane geeft ook genoeg vermoedens dat hij diezelfde Kaïn is, zo lijkt Kane door de serie heen ook onsterfelijk) te zijn (door de vele aanslagen op hem en gebruikt hij zelf ook vele bijbelse verwijzingen, zo heet zijn terroristengroep ook de brotherhood of Nod (het land waar Kain naartoe vluchtte) heet 1 van zijn generaals Seth (derde zoon van Adam en Eva) en noemt hij een stealth tank van hem zelf Ezekiel's wheel ( naar Ezechiël). In de game speel je steeds een generaal van de GDI of van Kane zelf die hun legers leidt. Je strijdt ook niet altijd voor het goede.
Als christen vindt ik het moeilijk om te zeggen of je deze game kan spelen, ik zou zeggen dat het niet kan omdat er niet heel duidelijk een verschil in zit tussen de strijd van goed en kwaad en je toch met je legers veel mensen uitmoord. Voor de mensen die daar minder moeite mee hebben is het zeker een interessante en goede game om te spelen.

Holiday is over, internship begins
It's my 3rd school year and also time for my internship. I'm doing my internship at stichting Wisebloom who are currently
busy with a project. The project is called jouweigenwijsheid.nl and is an interactive website for youth between 10-15 about 14 different
social themes. On the website they get information and learn to develop their own view on the themes. The youth can create an account with a
character on the website and discuss with other youngsters on the website. They can also get in contact with organisations that can help them if they
have problems.
Stichting Wisebloom also wants to put games on the website about the different themes and that is where I come in. I am responsible for the game department of
Wisebloom, a unique opportunity off course. I will definetly learn a lot from this internship.

But I thought we have been thrown out of the garden of eden to never return again???
Firstly I can tell this is something I have been waiting for, for a long time. Adam's Venture, a Christian game made by the Dutch game studio "Vertigo games". The problem with Christian games so far was mostly that the graphics were very bad and in a lot of cases even the gameplay. Adam's Venture is truly an exception in this, it's not yet "THE" Christian game that can compete with the big boys, but it is definitely a very good first step.
In Adam's Venture you play an adventurer called Adam and you are searching for the lost garden of Eden. You have to solve different kind of puzzles and clear obstacles that are based on bible texts, I enjoyed this puzzling very much. One important element of this game, is that it is a non-violent game, nevertheless you need to make sure you survive the different obstacles. We all know why we've been kicked out of the garden of Eden, so why should we easily get back in? This will bring some nice excitement. As you can read, Adam's Venture is a real Christian game and I definitely recommend to play this game.

This was a very nice price for all the hard work we put in our project.
First we presented our game at the project fair and the day after we presented it in the presentation room.

Project Summary
For our school project we had to make a game together with TU Delft, they did the programming and we did the design and art. This project i had took the role as designer along with another student. Because of good communication between our team and the programmers in TU we were able to develop this game.
Game Summary
Expanova is all about balance, you as player need to keep that balance. In the center of the world there is a core, 3 types of elements fly around the core. The core absorbs these elements, but if the core gets to much of one element it explodes. You as player can also shoot elements in the core, but you do need to shoot the right elements in the core.
Our vision
With this game we wanted to give the player an experience, they needed to get that relaxing, chilling feeling when they were playing this game. Because of our simple game mechanic, our good music and nice visuals we were able to give players this feeling. We succeeded in this vision very quick, when we let people play our first playable they already got that relaxing feeling and were very enthousiastic about it.
Experience vs Game
During this project it was a constant battle between experience or game and we needed to find the right balance. During our project we we're always finding the good balance of both and sometimes we forgot one of the two. From the beginning we had that vision to give the player an experience but we didn't need to forget we we're making a game. At the end of the project I can say we succeeded in the experience, but the game part can use some more work.
Early in the development phase, we could already bring players the exeprience we wanted, decide for yourself with this video
Play testing
This project I did an usability test for the first time, we used the testlab at the HKU. I was test monitor and was leading the tests, the results we got we're very usefull. During this test we came to the conclusion that players get that feeling that we wanted to give them, however they didn't understand anything of the game. Some players weren't even able to pick up elements, but the didn't care because they felt so relaxed because of the game. This usability test was also very learninfull for me, because I had never done one before. For my first test the test wen't pretty well, we we're well prepared.
This test also confirmed that tests are really needed when making a game, the test gave problems we didn't thaught off, things that we thaught that were clear weren't clear to the player at all.
No sound designer
For this game we had someone for the music, Bart Delissen, which he did very good, the music just fitts the game in all ways and is very important for the feeling we want to give the players. However Bart is a composer and was responsible for the music of the game. We also needed a sound designer for the sound effects. I've mailed all sound designers of our school, put on posters, talked with students from music, but they we're all to busy. We needed sound effects so there was no other choice, we had to do it ourself, fortunately my roommate Guido Hamerling also study's music and technology, he wasn't a sound designer but he does has some knowledge about sound effects. We've spend three nights from 7:30 to 11:00 making 6 sound effects. Guido had the knowledge of the programs we used and were the tools were, I sat next to him trying to give him an impression of the sound effects we wanted. It was a very nice way to work
side by side, trying to get our vision in the sound effects.

Since May 2009 I write reviews for the Christian Youth magazine "Xist in Christ", this was my first review
Vechten tegen de duivel en zijn broers....?
Diablo 2 is al een oude game, maar nu pas geleden het derde deel in deze populaire reeks is aangekondigd en diablo 2 nog steeds door velen wordt gespeeld is het wel interessant om hier naar te kijken.
De naam Diablo belooft weinig goeds als titel, de naam Diablo betekent namelijk duivel in het spaans, gelukkig speel je in deze game niet samen met de duivel. In Diablo ben jij een held die het opneemt tegen Diablo. In dit 2e deel van de Diablo serie neem je het ook nog eens op tegen zijn 2 broers, Mephisto en Baal. Heeft de duivel broers dan? Dit is nou ook net het punt van Diablo, het is niet de duivel zoals wij die kennen uit de bijbel, toch is Diablo duidelijk geinspireerd door het christendom. Uiteindelijk daal je zelfs af naar de hel om het tegen Diablo op te nemen. Verder zijn er priesters, grote kathedralen waar je door heen moet en een aartsengel die je onderweg helpt .Diablo is geen christelijke game, maar vooral een duister fantasy spel die niet iedereen een fijn gevoel geeft, dit vooral om de vele satanische elementen en duistere omgevingen in de game.

Project Introduction assignment
Goal: Make an arcade game within one week with XNA 3.0
My Role: Programming, Designer
Project Summary
This was a small project we did together with the TU Delft. We had to make an arcade game within one week using 3d models in XNA 3.0. We defined what an arcade game is and began brainstoming. It had to be a short game, easy to learn, hard to master, difficulty curve and a survival element. We came up with the idea to protect something you don't control. From all sides enemies will attack that unit and you have to protect it by placing objects that will bounce the enemies back. After we had defined this idea, the next day we needed to define what the graphical layer should be, another brainstorm session. After this me and another student of the HKU began programming because the TU did not had any experience with XNA yet. It we're a few days of hard work but by friday we had a complete game
Game Summary
A lady is swimming circles in the water, but she isn't alone in the water, she is constantly attacked by crocodiles. You can protect her by throwin zebra's in the water so the crocodiles will attack the zebra instead of the lady, but you have to place the zebra's in the line the crocodile is swimming.
Making a game in one week
We had to make a game in less then 5 days together with students from the TU who we didn't know. It really seemed like a challenge, especially because we had to come up with a design of the game within one day, otherwise there wouldn't be enough days for developping. This was a challenge, but a good excersize to come up with idea's fast. Brainstorming was very handy for this and eventually led to our idea. However it was nice to build a game in one week, I rather have some more time for the design of the game.
Graphical layer
We had the idea of the game mechanic, but what would you be protecting. To come up with a graphical layer we needed visuals for the following aspects, what will be attacked, what will attack, what will protect, where will the attacking be. I came up with the following idea's:

Backup file - virus - firewall - computerscreen
Doodle - erasers - pencils - paper
Mouse - Cats - balls - room
Trash - Cleaning products - dishes - kitchen
